GPPALogoFounded in 1977, the Greater Pinnacle Peak Association is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation of the natural environment and the enhancement of quality of life in the North Scottsdale Sonoran Desert. We support desert preservation, wildlife conservation, the arts, and education through our publications, community initiatives, student grants, and donations to local nonprofits.

ACTIVITIES & ACCOMPLISHMENTS

A Peek at the Peak Magazine

          A Peek at the Peak magazine (The Peak)  is published in print and digital versions as a community service by GPPA and supported by local business advertising and Friends of GPPA. In North Scottsdale, Carefree, Cave Creek, and Rio Verde Arizona,  The Peak provides a voice for local writers and nonprofit organizations. By writing and donating magazine features and news articles that appear in the magazine, amateur and professional writers provide the public with valuable community information that is not available elsewhere. Published articles, often written by members of the Scottsdale group, cover a variety of community-oriented subjects such as desert  preservation, wildlife, local organizations, travel, the arts, restaurants and City of Scottsdale planning, 

Desert Foothills Scenic Drive

          Friends of the Scenic Drive, a division of GPPA, is dedicated to the preservation and DesertFoothills Logoenhancement of the Desert Foothills Scenic Drive, an area landmark since 1963. Friends organizes and funds projects to maintain the Scenic Drive, including maintaining plant identification signs and plant exhibits, painting utility boxes, posts and the backs of traffic signs using an environmentally-sensitive color, completing re-vegetation efforts and conducting roadside cleanups.

 

Cookout at the Ranch

           Every year since 1996, the hay wagons and good times have rolled at this benefit for desert CookoutAtTheRanchpreservation, wildlife conservation, and the Desert Foothills Scenic Drive. Co-sponsored by Outback Steakhouse, MacDonald's Ranch, Desert Foothills Cookouts, and A Peek at the Peak magazine, the event is organized by Friends of the Scenic Drive, GPPA, McDowell Sonoran Conservancy, Friends of Pinnacle Peak Park, and Rotary Club of Pinnacle Peak.

GPPA's accomplishments include:

  • Achieving positive impact on the development and preservation of our unique environment and quality of life since 1977

  • Publishing A Peek at the Peak magazine as a community service since 1983

  • Supporting the Desert Foothills Scenic Drive, established in 1963< through improvement projects, donations, roadside cleanups, public education, and Cookout at the Ranch

  • Using our publications to support other nonprofit community causes including the theater, museums, local artists, desert and wildlife conservationists, and Scottsdale's Shop with a Cop program

  • Organizing annual Write Stuff and photography contests to promote preservation and encourage local creativity

  • Making an annual college grant to a graduating senior in the Cave Creek Unified School District

  • Making annual donations to local nonprofits that are working to preserve, save, and rehabilitate native birds and animals

  • Sponsoring Southwest Wildlife's "Wild About Wildlife" wildlife rehabilitation benefit

  • Organizing Cookout at the Ranch with the assistance of the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy, Friends of Pinnacle Peak Park, and Pinnacle Peak Rotary Club

  • Donating of more than $50,000 to Scottsdale's McDowell Sonoran Preserve and recognition as a "Lifetime Friend of the Preserve"

  • Organizing the 2005 Inaugural Preservation Golf Tournament that raised more than $11,000 for Scottsdale's McDowell Sonoran Preserve

MISSION

Nonprofit for Communication and Community

The nonprofit Greater Pinnacle Peak Association (GPPA) was founded in 1977 in the Pinnacle Peak area of Scottsdale, Arizona. GPPA is dedicated to the preservation of the  natural environment and the enrichment of quality of life in the north Scottsdale Sonoran Desert. GPPA supports desert preservation, wildlife conservation, the arts, education, and community service through its publications, initiatives, student grants, and by assisting local nonprofits.

In addition to other community initiatives, GPPA publishes The Peak magazine, which is  distributed in  North Scottsdale, Carefree, Cave Creek, North Phoenix and the Verde communities as a complimentary service to the community.  It also publishes this Web site and e-Peak, an monthly electronic newsletter that is e-mailed to subscribers. Friends of the Scenic Drive, a volunteer organization that maintains and enhances the Desert Foothills Scenic Drive, is a division of GPPA. Donations, and proceeds from GPPA's publications fund the organization's activities.
